TMJ is the abbreviation for the temporomandibular joint. This is the joint connecting the skull with the jaw and is an area that is rich in nerves and blood vessels. Because of the complexity of this area of the body, if the position of the jaw and muscles surrounding it are altered, it can actually be a root cause of migraine headaches.
Because migraines affect over 10% of the Earth’s population, it is important to find a way to cope with these debilitating attacks and underlying problems like TMJ dysfunction. Many turn to medication, which may offer temporary relief. However, this only covers up symptoms, allowing pain to return. A trend is developing toward finding natural, long-lasting relief instead of reaching for a bottle of pills. Is there something that works?

Both of these conditions can be helped by using the same technique because they are both related to the same problem. A misalignment in the upper bones of the neck may be the underlying cause of both TMJ and migraines. Why is this the case?
The atlas bone, the top bone of the neck (C1 vertebra), is susceptible to becoming misaligned due to the mobility of the head and neck. When the atlas moves out of place, the muscles of the jaw shift causing it to move out of its proper position, thereby resulting in irritation to the nerves and soft tissue of the face.
At Precision Spine Specialists, we thoroughly examine our patients to find misalignments in the upper neck. We then use a very gentle adjustment that does not require popping or forcing the spine back into place. This low force correction relieves the pressure and irritation on the facial nerves and TMJ. This is often all that is needed to see an end to TMJ pain and the accompanying migraine headaches. Many patients have reported finding great relief after only a few adjustments.
